Starting in 2022, the Office of Management and Budget Memorandum (OMB) issued M-22-09 which provides guidance for Zero Trust best practices and mandates requirements that federal agencies must meet. More recently, in January 2025, Executive Order 14028, issued by the White House, mandates that federal agencies and their partners must use "phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication" (MFA) to significantly improve cybersecurity.
